INAS-FID 3rd TRI NATIONS CRICKET SERIES UPDATE
Team South-Africa at the Melbourne Cricket Ground
Team SA departs on Sunday 29/11 from O R Tambo Airport at 17:55. The team members arrived from the different destinations before 13:00. Cricket South-Africa sponsored the team with 2 sets of playing gear, 2 shorts, 2 T-shirts and a track suit each.
The aircraft left almost 1 hour later from OR Tambo International Airport and arrived late in Sydney for the connecting flight to Melbourne. The team then took a later flight out of Sydney, arriving in Melbourne at 19h00pm.
1 December
The team departs after breakfast for their first training session at Prahran field. The players were a bit jetlagged after the long flights. The training session did the team well.
2nd December
The team departs to the Junction Oval for the first match of the Series.
Australia batted first and scored 158 for 7. South Africa had it very tough but was hopeful for at least 100. We had to be satisfied with 91 all out.
Outstanding Bowlers: Jan Makololo 2 for 24 and Lee Benting 2 for 23
Outstanding Batsmen: Ayanda Kolisi 17 and Jan Makololo 15.
Ayanda Kolisi left the field temporarily due to a very bad sinus headache. He had an amazing come-back with the bat, after the headache has subsided. He made South Africa proud by scoring comfortably, posting a respectable score of 17.
3rd December
The teams depart to the MCG (The infamous Melbourne Cricket Grounds) after breakfast. Australia is playing against England.
The Opening Ceremony took place with the Minister of Family, Housing, community and indigenous affairs gave a key note address after the CEO of Cricket Australia Mr. James Sutherland encouraged all the players.
Team South Africa departs from MCG to Northcote for their training session.
4th December
South Africa played against England on the Trinity Grammar School Oval.
Our players were very relaxed.
England batted first and scored 174 for 7. The batting started very well with good partnerships at the start of the innings but we lost too many wickets in the match.
Outstanding Bowlers: David Jardine 2 for 32 and Lee Benting 2 for 18
Outstanding Batsmen: Keelan Dorasamy 21 Ayanda Kolisi 20.
5th December
All the team will have a free day on Saturday.
The team will have a practice session in the morning and we have been invited by a proud South African family to spend the day with them.

3RD TRIANGULAR CRICKET SERIES - SOUTH-AFRICA, AUSTRALIA, ENGLAND
Press Release
24 November 2009
As part of an agreement between South Africa, England and Australia in 2004, all three countries would be given the opportunity to host a Triangular cricket series for people with an intellectual disability in there respective countries. The first ever series was held in South Africa in 2005 between South Africa, England and Australia, with Australia the first ever champions of this unique series. South Africa played in the finals on Boland Park, Paarl and was convincingly won by a good Australian team
In 2007, England was given the opportunity to host and we soon realized that both England and Australia had grown tremendously in there respective approaches towards the game. It was clear that South Africa would soon look at other avenues and a new approach towards development to secure more players getting involved with cricket. South-Africa soon came to the realization that younger players should be given the opportunity to compete on the highest level in order for us to secure a healthier future for the game.
Outstanding spells from players like David Jardine from Kwazulu-Natal and Lee Benting from Boland (Western Cape) secured a place for South Africa in the finals against Australia.
With Australia scoring 223 runs after 50 overs, it was always difficult to reach the target, but with 169 runs for 3 after 30 overs, the win was close. Unfortunately after loosing 4 quick wickets for 15 runs the target gradually became very difficult to reach. Unfortunately we lost with 12 runs against a good, but vulnerable Australian team
Against this background, Team South-Africa will leave our shores on the 29th November with great hopes and enthusiasm to win the 3rd and final leg of the Triangular Cricket series down under. Most of the previous players retain there positions in the team with two new comers making there début. Again, we will depend on the experience of players like David Jardine (Kwazulu-Natal), Lee Benting (Boland), Severo Amos (Western Province), Keegen Chetty and Keelan Doorsami (Kwazul-Natal). Not forgetting the valuable contributions from a player like Jonathan Faroa (Boland), this team can beat both Australia and England on any day. With a bit of luck, good news will accompany this team back home when we arrive on 13 December 2009.

This gold medal was just one of many received during the championship. Craig have also been nominated as the BEST ATHLETE of the GLOBAL GAMES. What an amazing athlete and ambassador of our country. He has competed since Sidney 2000 in every major championship, albeit World and European championship. He has been a stalwart in the individual and the relay teams. I think his legacy will live on for a very long time in the hearts and minds of South-Africa and the World. We hope to see him in action in London 2012 and possibly Brazil. Who knows...

SWAN - 2009
The next few pages will be dedicated to the 2009 publication of the SWAN i.e. the official newsletter of SASA II. Listed in here will be issues and events such as the recently held Global Games in Liberec, Chezh Republic; as well as the Downs Swimming in Portugal. The local scene will be centred around the 2008 National Championship in Cape Town as well as the 2009 Summer Champs in Bloemfontein.
Also be mindful of the upcoming National Elite Championship in Ermelo, Mpumalanga. A brief overview of this event will also be given.
So herewith are the Preface of this year's publication as well as as special message from madame president.
Preface:
The “Swan” also known as “Ama Swana Swana” is in its 9th year of publication. This dedicated newsletter has gone through a number of changes, but has tried to keep to its primary objective. Its primary objective has always been to highlight the sports achievements of all its affiliate members, albeit it on a provincial and or international level. In short, the idea is to tell the whole of South-Africa how all our athletes have performed in a given year of publication.
However, I always had this niggling question in my mind, does the said newsletter meet its primary objective. Further to this, who else got to know of the sports achievements of our athletes? I can’t help shake this thought that the newsletter are being looked at once, and than being shelved in file 13 or even worse thrown away.
My feeling is that the newsletter has to serve a wider purpose. And maybe it has always, but all the same, I believe its purpose should be much wider than its current circulation.
It should also serve to draw people and or “friends” to the organization. Beyond this the “SWAN” should also serve as a means to get people within the SASA II family to engage with one another. At the same time the said family has to be kept abreast of all current affairs within the organization.
Having said this, how will WE meet these objectives? I believe you the reader can ensure that these very objectives are being met. Importantly, we should be able to harness the digital resources to our avail, particularly because it will expedite circulation, as well as reach a much wider “audience”
So let us take hands and shape this newsletter. Let US build a legacy!
MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT
What can a person say after a wonderful, exciting and successful year?
SASA-II is still going from strength to strength just because we have so many committed officials and coaches and of cause our dedicated athletes, involve.
The Down Syndrome Swimming team did extremely well at the 4th World Down Syndrome Swimming Championships in Portugal, with Jennifer Higgins again collecting the most medals at this event.
In September 2008 athletics, basketball and futsal teams were selected and in March 2009 swimming and table tennis teams were selected to represent South Africa at the 2nd Global Games in Czech Republic. Team South Africa came back with 21 medals, improving in team codes and made plenty of new friends in the International arena.
We know our officials are more motivated for the coming years after a very successful Capacity Building project in September ’09. Working with athletes with an intellectual disability is always a challenge and we have to be on top of all new ideas and methods.
The financial support from National Lottery Distribution Trust Fund makes it possible for these athletes to compete on International level. Sport and Recreation SA help us to develop our athletes and make sure they realized their full potential. The support and guidance from SASCOC and National Federations makes it much easier for SASA-II athletes to perform to their best at world class events.
We always aim to make our Provinces and Country proud when we participate in an event.
SASA-II solutes everybody that makes a difference in our athletes life!

SASA II Capacity Building - September 2009 - Pretoria
This capacity building was made possible by the hard-work and dedication of the administrators involved, of which the president, Mrs Lizzie Vogel played a pivotal role. The financial support of NLDTF should also be highlighted in this regard. Once again many thanks to the Lottery Distribution Fund.
Our thanks and appreciation should also be extended to Xco sport for their sponsorship of material that was used in the sessions.
Once again, thanks to all the administrators of the respective provinces that have made the sessions so successful.
As per the opening sentiments, "we are in the business of building legacies, not for ourselves but for our primaries..."
