The South African Sports Association for the Intellectually Impaired (SASA-II) serves as the governing body in matters pertaining to the amateur sporting activities for all intellectually impaired persons who belong to this Association. SASA-II is a full member of SASCOC and INAS-FID (International Sport Federation for people with Intellectual Disability) INAS-FID is a member of the International Paralympic Committee.
SASA–II adheres to an international definition of intellectual disability that is recognized by the United Nations World Health Organisation (WHO) as well as other professional organizations.
Against this background do we facilitate sport in the following codes (regional, national and international):

Cross Country
Cricket
Swimming
Table Tennis
Basketball
Football
Netball
Hokker
Our National Championships (amongst Eastern-Cape, Western-Cape,
So much so that our cross country team has just competed in one such event in OSTRZESWIEZ POLAND from the 10 April 2008 – 15 April 2008 hosted by INAS FID
Eight countries i.e
Team South-Africa has grown from strength to strength every time that they have competed. It just go to show that if one wants your athletes to compete at this level and do well, than one need to expose them more regularly to this kind of intense competition.
This year proved to be exactly that, in that seven out of the nine athletes has come under the top 10 athletes in the world (+-30 athletes in a race). Two i.e. Abram Matloga and Mncedi Kanti has received individual bronze and silver medals respectively.
The team results were just as astounding in that the Men’s Team received Gold in the 6km race and silver in the 3km race as well the Ladies Team received two Bronze medals for 2 km and 4km races. I think anyone will agree that this team has really made South-Africa proud.

Synopsis of the Performances of Team South-Africa
August 2008
Team South Africa came 3rd overall with a total of 18 medals: 2 Gold, 9 Silver and 7 Bronze. Great Britain was the overall winning team and Hong Kong the runner-up. The SA male relay team broke the Africa and SA records in all 5 of the relay events and medalled in four – 3 silver and 1 bronze. The female relay team medalled in all five events – 2 silver and 3 bronze – and broke 2 African and SA Records in the process. A total of 15 African and SA Records were broken, 2 Downs World Records and 21 personal best times were achieved.
CRAIG GROENEWALD (29) from Gauteng was our top swimmer with 2 Gold, 3 Silver and 1 Bronze medal. He medalled in all his individual events and also obtained a further 3 silver and 1 Bronze medal as part of the relay team.
Sipho Mjoka (19), a young swimmer from KZN, is ranked in the top 12 in all his events and swam personal best times in 2 events. He won 2 silver medals as part of the relay team.
Valentino Vergotine (21) from Western Cape swam 2 personal best times while his relay team came 4th and they broke the African and SA Record.
Cindy Mkhize (17) from KZN is the first woman from the previously disadvantaged group to have qualified for an International Event. She swam personal best times in all 5 of her individual events, reached the finals in the 50m Breaststroke and broke the African as well as the SA Record in the process. Cindy specialises in Breaststroke and has been in training for only a year and should develop into one of South Africa’s top female swimmers.
Jennifer Higgins (24) (KZN) is the only female swimmer with Down syndrome to participate at this Championship. She participated in all the longer distances (events she holds the Downs World Records in) namely the gruelling 400m IM, 400 and 800m Freestyle as well as the 200M Breaststroke and Backstroke. She broke the Downs World Record in the 800M Freestyle as well as the 200M Backstroke. She is also a member of the 4 x 200M freestyle female relay team that won a silver medal and in the process broke the Africa and SA Record.
Cornelia Fowler (28) (KZN) has been a member of the SASA-II National Swimming Team since 1998. She broke her own SA Record in the 200m Breaststroke, resulting in a 4th overall position in this event. She is ranked in the top 10 in all but one of her individual events, making finals in four. She was a team member in all five of the relay events and swam personal best times in three of her five relay legs, obtaining 2 silver and 3 bronze medals.
Dorothy Smit (22) (SWD), reached the finals in 4 of her individual events and broke the African and SA Records in the 800m Freestyle and the 200m Butterfly. She was a member of the female relay and swam in all 5 events, winning 2 silver and 3 bronze medals.
Lourette Seyffert (25) North West also reached finals in 2 events and swam personal best times in 4 individual events. She also swam in the 5 relay events, winning 2 silver and 3 bronze medals.
Leanne Sterrenberg (27) from Western Cape swam in four of the five relay events, scooping silver and 3 bronze medals. She furthermore bettered her entry times in two of her individual events.

Request for media coverage
Once again, thank you for the tremendous support that we have received during our recent trip to Poland, with specific reference to the 4th Open European Swimming Championship.
I have also alluded to a few months ago of our upcoming National Championship.
Well we are about two weeks away from this event, hence our request once again for some coverage of the event.
The Annual National Championship will be held in the Cape Town (Bellville area) from the 29 September – 04 October 2008 (Please find attached the programme for the week).
This competition will showcase the events of Athletics (Bellville Stadium), Cross Country, Basketball, Football, Netball and Hokker.
Here are a few of our national athletes that have performed exceptionally well this year.
Cross Country: (European Championship – April 2008)
Seven out of the nine athletes has come under the top 10 athletes in the world (+-30 athletes in a race). Two i.e. Abram Matloga (Limpopo Province) and Mncedi Khanti (Eastern Cape) has received individual bronze and silver medals respectively.
The team results were just as astounding in that Men’s Team received Gold as well the Ladies Team, Jane Rasakhanye, Fulufhelo Mavhengele and Khensani Magagula – (Limpopo Province) as well as Smangele Tembe (KZN) received a Bronze medal.

Within the Team Sports arena (Football, Netball, Basketball) have the following provinces i.e. Limpopo, Free State, Eastern Cape, manage to secure the top positions for the last few years. However, it is quite interesting that the first position within the respective codes has been held by a province for not more then two (2) years. This, in my understanding, signifies the level of the competition amongst the provinces.
Team Western Cape was the victor for Hokker (adaptive game almost similar to hockey, for the person with cerebral palsy) in 2006. They will once again try their level best to rise to the occasion, particularly because they are playing on home turf.
Apart from this will we also have an invitation team from Nigeria, participating in Athletics and Table Tennis.
These are but a few of the senior athletes (and events) that will one will be able to see during this years’ championship.
This competition also serves as the final official selection arena of Team South-Africa for the Global Games in the Czech Republic in June\July 2009.
Based on the above-mentioned information we would like to make an urgent appeal to you and your organization to cover this important sporting event of the Intellectually Dis-abled. The coverage can take the form of “the championship before” and \ “highlights of the championship” itself.
Your support through the expectant coverage will go a long way in making sure that our broader community is aware of the achievements of this minority group (dis-abled).
Your co-operation in this regard will be most appreciated.
